Drunken Tales review: Terroraiser

По правде говоря, со мной не часто бывает такое, что прослушав диск один раз – я немедленно повторил программу. Однако российской группе EVOKE THY LORDS удалось меня принудить к этому. И все потому, что музыка группы несет такой отпечаток своеобразия, что разобраться в нем захотелось немедленно! Представьте смесь ранних BLACK SABBATH и JETHRO TULL, и вы поймете, что музыка здесь довольно необычная. От первых взяты мощные раскатистые риффы, от вторых – волшебные звуки флейты. Такой синтез даже не нуждается в вокале, хотя он здесь и есть, причем в разных формах – и гроулинг, и чистый. И даже женский. Но играет он довольно скромную роль.



Основную нагрузку несет именно инструментальная часть, и справляются с ней музыканты на “отлично”. Даже подозрительно напоминающий вступление к “Hells Bells” от AC/DC основной рифф в композиции “Dirty Game” отнюдь не портит картину. Если это получилось случайно – то этого говорит о композиторском таланте музыкантов, ну а если все же его одолжили у австралийцев – то все равно, найти классный рифф и творчески его переработать – это тоже надо уметь. Отличная и своеобразная работа, которая хотя и уходит корнями в глубокое прошлое, но звучит по-настоящему свежо и современно.

Solitude Productions к своему десятилетию выпустили гигантский сборник X Years Of Doom & Solitude, куда включили по трэку с каждого изданного ими за десять лет релиза. 35 часов, 220 трэков и все бесплатно, то есть даром.

Еще один отечественный коллектив, который неизменно вызывает у меня чувство гордости. Во-первых, ребята из Новосибирска сделали едва ли не единственный хороший кавер на классику "Black Winter Day", а во-вторых, очень круто эволюционировали от готишного дума в сторону психоделичного стоунера с классическими духовыми инструментами. Разумеется, и гроулинг тоже никуда не делся, но зато он занимает такое удачное место в финальном миксе, что совсем не вызывает раздражения (чего нельзя сказать о микшировании вокала в несколько ранее описанном релизе).



Музыка в итоге получилась чуть ли не пост-роковой по атмосфере, да что и говорит, есть тут даже и что-то от шугейза (кто знает редкий релиз шугейза с флейтами Blind Mr. Jones - меня поймет), в общем, я испытал все то же ностальгическое звучание и кайф, что испытывает этот самый космонавт в баре на обложке альбома. Что еще могу сказать, браво. Кстати, у ребят вышел недавно новый альбом ( о том, как круто выращивать грибы у себя в гараже).

Un incantatore di serpenti nel deserto, un flauto che muove polvere e che fa alzare la testa al più pericoloso ed incontrollabile dei rettili.

Come un mistico orientale, ecco entrare in punta di piedi nell’universo Stoner-Doom il progetto Evoke Thy Lords. A dire il vero, già avevano rilasciato un lavoro in studio, ma il sound passato si muoveva su lidi gotici e Death. Ora è giunto il momento di evolvere, ed in questo senso ci riescono perfettamente con un disco che incanta muovendosi su tonalità del passato. Il cambiamento sta nell’introduzione di un mood Rock, per nulla malinconico e gotico, e che si fa lisergico via via. La voce rimane ancorata su degli schemi Death, mentre gli sviluppi e la consistenza dei suoni sono marcatamente Doom. Qui e là poi ecco spuntare un flauto, le cui dissonanze e minimali sortite arricchiscono il disco. Le chitarre disegnano trame avvolgenti, rendendo più sofisticati e fruibili le cadenze monolitiche del disco. La strada da percorrere è ancora lunga, ma restiamo ben impressionati da “Drunken Tales”.

Yet another review from Russian-based Solitude Productions and yet another doom metal record. This time it is Evoke Thy Lords, a stoner doom metal act from Russian Federation (Novosibirsk city).

Drunken Tales is their second full-length material, a five-tracker album. Actually, it contains only four original and ordinary song and one closing bonus track named “Cause Follows Effect”. This track finalizes the album giving the end to the space walk.

Their sound is not entirely about doom but also contains some southern vibe; accompanied by some sludge and 70s rock elements, which gives this extra layer to their music. Heavy guitar tunes, excellent riffing, gruff and groovy vocals (although the album is almost devoid of vocals which is quite strange?!), powerful bass groove and hypnotic jazz flute sounds, providing a pretty unique and enjoyable vibe, are just some of the things one can hear on this record.

Songs are perfectly composed and song structures are really fantastic. There’s a certain amount of heaviness, catchiness but also psychedelia and melancholia which makes it quite diverse and enjoyable to listen to.

Drunken Tales is not like any other album popping up once in a wide from Solitude Productions. This shit is different and an opus that is brilliant mostly due to its instrumentation. Recommended for fans of Down, Kyuss, Saturnus, Corrosion Of Conformity, My Dying Bride, Cathedral etc.

Review: Heavy Planet: Bong Hits From the Astral Basement Volume 2

Титаническая цифровая подборка - сладж, стоунер, дум и иже с ними - от небезызвестного портала Heavy Planet вышла в свет аккурат в первый день этого года: ровно сто композиций от сотни команд со всего мира (из российских коллективов присутствуют CSBR Experience и Evoke Thy Lords, есть еще украинцы The Curse of Wendigo). Факт сам по себе более чем впечатляющий, и из минусов этой работы можно выделить разве что следующие два - то, что авторы компиляции не стали заморачиваться с выравниваем уровня громкости, и что при таком необъятном количестве трэков на поиск наиболее интересных композиций придется потратить некоторое время.

Уставший и изможденный, тихим поздним вечером он одиноко брёл в почти что заброшенном захолустном городке, переживающем весь упадок техногенного кризиса, пытаясь уйти от преследовавших его проблем и забот, наивно полагая, что таким образом они останутся далеко позади, не идя следом и не догнав его в самое ближайшее время. Но нет, они неустанно шли рядом, собственно говоря, они всегда были при нём. Нависшие проблемы молча, словно тень, шаг за шагом плелись за ним. Поняв всю безысходность ситуации, он свернул в тёмный переулок, и завидев огромную разноцветную неоновую вывеску бара, так заманчиво приглашающую внутрь, он решительно перешагнул его порог. Оглядев разом всё помещение, в котором было не так много посетителей, он понял, что не ошибся и пришёл по адресу, чтобы крепко выпить. А на фоне играла тихая спокойная музыка. И первая мысль астронавта, рвущаяся наружу, что скоро надо возвращаться на космическую станцию Last Frontier FX7 для передачи груза, практически сразу растворилась в первом стакане алкоголя…. Как бы вам того ни хотелось, но вам придется послушать эти “Пьяные сказки”. За кадром – отечественная формация Evoke Thy Lords.
Коллектив, в первую очередь, примечателен экспериментами в звучании. Сегодня команда открывает новую главу своей истории – это психоделичный doom/stoner с флейтой, гроулом, женским вокалом и космической тематикой. Остальное кажется под действием психотропных препаратов – такова общая атмосфера, наполненная вязкостью и жидким состоянием какого-то вещества, которое обычно используют для погружения в анабиоз. Всё переплетается – дурман, алкоголь, эйфория, сон; в результате – лёгкость и релаксация, настоящий побег от причин, вызывающих хандру. Всё дело в представлении, понимании и восприятии. Кстати, местами встречается грувовый фундамент и наследие рока 1970-х годов. Но самый смак – в длительности релиза. Пять полновесных треков, несмотря на продолжительные временные рамки каждого, проплывают на одной волне, оставляя за собой приятный след благозвучия, где любой аккорд можно попробовать на вкус, лениво потягиваясь и наслаждаясь извлеченной нотой в отдельности.
В редкие вокальные темы даже не стоит вникать, так как они наслаиваются на музыку и выполняют функцию скорее фона, нежели несущую основу. Женского голоса стало гораздо меньше по сравнению с прошлой работой “Escape to the Dreamlands” (2008), что следует отметить как плюс. Оставив как можно больше пространства для музыки, группа выиграла во многом, подчеркнув всю многофактурность релиза. Гитары, которые образуют своеобразный кокон, и мягкая флейта, иногда берущая на себя задачи соло-партий, придают диску искру утончённой экстравагантности.
Он проснулся на утро от разбудивших его громких звуков только что приземлившегося торгового звездолёта, с трудом осознавая где находится и как попал сюда. Вот и настал новый день с вернувшимися обратно проблемами. А яркое солнце чужой планеты лукаво ласкало своими оранжевыми лучами… Релиз предоставлен Solitude Productions.

Evoke Thy Lords are from Novosibirsk, Siberia, Russia. The band has formed in 2002 and released two full-length albums and one ep. Their influences reach from progressive elements combined with psychedelic space guitar jams and, luckily, rare sludge vocal parts. (Yesterdays Dream)

Solid guitar sound, powerful grooves, trance-inducing flute sounds, extra heavy riffs and psychedelic elements is what you will find here. Absolutely recommended for everyone into something Stoner/Doom/Sludge like a mix of Sleep, Kyuss, Shrinebuilder, OM, Electric Wizard, High On Fire and Eyehategod, but adding their own unique spin on things. Evoke Thy Lords - Cause Follows Effect - masterpiece and first stoner/doom stuff on Russian doom compilations. Other stuff is not bad and have some good moments, but most tracks gone on  background as 3/3+ stuff, IMO best comp was 2005 and 2007/2009 releases is OK but not something very important, just sample CD for the history of Russian death/doom scene. 2009 you need to buy anyway - Cause Follows Effect available only here. The flute and heavy metal have had their dalliances. Black Widow made it fit. Agony Bag’s bozo show was amusing. Then, the occult thing carved out a crap load of Ian Andersons. But, no one has done it quite like Evoke. Drunken Tales began by getting grimy, rolling through a puddle of Ramesses’s refuse. It was full-on death-to-all which made the eventual woodwind fluttering all the more alluring. A couple tracks deep, you were completely sold. Flute and sludge melting in a tree, h-y-p-o-n-o-t-i-z-e, deep breath, m-e. Too D-a-l-i?

It is a quite unusual turn in the history of Evoke thy Lords and Russian Death Metal – the band graded from Gothic/Folk Metal to slow, catching Stoner with the sounds of flute and Death Metal growl… Well, I don’t know whether a Russian inclination to declare and escalate the Russian origin or just a sincere and open-hearted Russian spirit allowed Irina Drebuschak to play with the flute in this band further. Indeed, that girl plays really well, but such synthesis of Stoner and stylized Folk seems to be especially peculiar.
The title of the album is pleasantly reflected on the cover where a protective suit (well, I don’t know if there is any fellow who is able to move inside) sits in the bar and drinks beer and maybe something stronger too… By seeing this you immediately envisage the sound of the music – it seems to sound like rude, quite Yankee Stoner with a strong and clear voice, which has been rinsed out with various kinds of whiskey, from “Laphroaig” to “Highland Park”; a psychedelic mood with lots of guitar solos. However, the music resonates with such an image insignificantly and just in the beginning. The band extensively diverges and becomes distant from such an ideal prototype – that is to say, the music blossoms into more diverse colours and because of the inserts of flute it becomes hardly predictable and the vocals make the music deviate to a weird, cold and gloomy world – perhaps Novosibirsk, not the Wild West with the stale grass.
Of course, it doesn’t mean that it is a great Stoner album with tasteful novelties, vice versa, the flute soon starts to make you restive, create allusions to poor hippie Progressive Folk as well as the vocals, which is an intruder here – it heaves everything to the march of Death Metal; and that goes back on the Dionysius’ image of Stoner. What is more, the voice of the girl who plays with the flute reduces the role of Metal in their music…
Thus, “Drunken Tales” are not as drunk as they could be; they seem to be more sugary. That is because of panic flute that is more similar to a romantic dizziness caused by a chalice of wine that had been drunk during the hot summer day in the park rather than a destructive dizziness of willpower. Unfortunately, the vocalist’s voice drowns in the pond of music. Of course, it is not that bad, but surely not every Stoner fan would admire such tastes and spices.

Na dworze trzydziestostopniowy mróz, w obskurnej knajpie leje się wysokoprocentowa gorzała, a na scenie występuje kapela, która improwizuje w składzie wokal, gitara, bas, perkusja i flet. Gdzieś przy barze zasiada były astronauta i bełkotliwym głosem opowiada o swojej wyprawie w kosmos, a inni odpowiadają mu historyjką o wizycie UFO w pobliskiej wiosce. Jakiś brodaty i bezzębny gościu pląsający pod sceną krzyczy do gitarzysty „igraj kak Santana!” i proszę, jak na zamówienie, improwizowane solo też się pojawia. Paru ludzi przy stoliku pod ścianą klaszcze miarowo w dłonie, a któryś z nich, gdy zespół się nieco uspokaja, pokrzykuje „Boris, polewoj!”. Ta sceneria idealnie pasuje do „Drunken Tales” - drugiego pełnego albumu syberyjskiej formacji EVOKE THY LORDS. Goście ci wycinają stoner/doom metalowe riffy wywodzące się w prostej linii od BLACK SABBATH czy KYUSS, na życzenie gości po pięćdziesiątce i pań żądnych ‘przytulanych’ tańców do czegoś ciut spokojniejszego nawiązują do hard rocka z lat 70-ych, a wokal porykuje przy akompaniamencie fletowych popiskiwań, ale tak, by nie zrazić podpitego towarzystwa do grupy zapewniającej cosobotnią zabawę w tej spelunie. Nie da się ukryć, że w tym pędzie, który ogarnął większość miast i miasteczek w bardziej cywilizowanej części Europy chciałoby się uczestniczyć w takiej celebracji wolnego czasu, bez myślenia o tym co będzie jutro i czy barmanowi starczy sił, by zza wielkiej, całej w drewnie lady mieć siłę zapodawać alkohol do białego rana. Tu czas zatrzymuje się prawie że w miejscu, a muzycy EVOKE THY LORDS, którzy na co dzień snują się w tej lekko surrealistycznej rzeczywistości tak jak pozostali uczestnicy tego alkoholowo-tanecznego spędu, w zupełnie naturalny sposób oddali swoje szare doświadczenia w tych pięciu długaśnych kompozycjach będących niczym nie kończący się jam session kilku muzyków, którzy są jakby nie z tej planety i zupełnie nie przejmują się, że nie staną się gwiazdami muzycznej sceny. Bo im wystarcza, że raz na jakiś czas biorą do rąk instrumenty i mogą pograć, nawet jeśli towarzycho już kompletnie nie jarzy co się dzieje dookoła… Dlatego trochę zdziwił mnie bonusowy kawałek pt. „Cause Follows Effect”, w którym zabrzmieli bardziej doom metalowo i nieco więcej tutaj growli, jak i żeńskich podśpiewywań niejakiej Anastazji Kuszelewej. Ale to też zacnie bujający i jednocześnie wgniatający w fotel numer, w którym też jest dużo miejsca na fletowe, gitarowe i basowe odjazdy, a jazzowo-bluesowy fragment w siódmej minucie po prostu rządzi!

Second album from these Russians and my first encounter with their music. At first, during the debut track the band seems to follow quite ordinary Doom Death patterns: heavy sound, low tuned bass lines, lazy, dusty drumming, and repetitive, groovy guitars all supported by an uncomprehensive raspy vocal, but then the flute gets in the way and it all becomes quite spacey and stoner, I can't count how many times I felt into a meditative, lethargic state during the audition, probably that's their intention, too, but except for the flute lines it lacks of originality and it failed in keeping my attention high along the way.

Maybe fans of Stoner Doom will appreciated this much better than I did, after all there's nothing wrong with the sound, with the execution or with the compositions, it just went by me somehow.

Завъртях диска и това, което ме удари от тонколоните, бе голяма изне- нада, като дори се зачудих дали това е същата група. Не знам какво се е случило през изминалите пет години с музикантите от Сибир, освен напускането на отговорната за чистите женски вокали Ирина Ловчикова, но в Drunken Tales говорим вече за стоунър/слъдж/дуум метъл с добре втъкани 70-тарски психи- делични нотки. Песните в албума са само пет, но напълно достатъчни, за да ви отнесат с доброто и завладяващото си изпълнение. Нетипични, но пък адски на място, са магическите излияния на флейтистката Ирина, които само добавят позитиви в музиката на руснаците. Изненадващо добър албум, който мисля, че не трябва да пропускате. Дебютный альбом Evoke Thy Lords 'Escape To The Dreamlands': "He слишком убедительно звучащий и не слишком актуальный готик/дэт/ дум-метал, очень слабенькое сопрано и откровенно вторичный материал в целом". Вот такой стрёмный дебютник у ребят был. Но прошло всего каких-то пять лет - и что мы слышим? Второй альбом этих сибиряков оказался прямо-таки гигантским шагом даже не просто вперёд, но вперёд и одновременно куда-то в сторону! Их стилистику теперь можно охарактеризовать как стоунер/дум-метал с сильной психоделической компонентой и бесспорно оригинальным решением в виде практически перманентно звучащих партий флейты. С ненужными соплями в виде элементов готики и женского вокала было покончено, и Evoke Thy Lord зазвучали исключительно зрело, серьёзно и во многом самобытно. А ещё, на мой взгляд, удачно то, что парни не перегнули палку с длительностью звучания пластинки: 43 минуты, в которые уложились 4 новых композиции и бонус-трэк "Cause Follows Effect", стали оптимальным временем, на протяжении которого вы действительно получаете удовольствие от этого материала.

Лаборатория фантастики

Любителям отечественного стоунера, думаю, стоит продегустировать. Главные отечественные "ктулхианцы" сменили вектор и устремились в космос, выпивать в невесомости и расширять сознание, играя на флейте в скафандре. От дебюта разительно отличается.

1. Hello EVOKE THY LORDS, please could you introduce yourself to the French who are reading ?

Hello, guys! «We’re band with drunken cosmonaut on the cover», something like that.

2. Since your last opus, you changed your own style. Now you play some kind of Stoner/Doom on « Drunken Tales ». Can you explain this mutation ?

The explanation is rather straightforward: our key points and musical values had changed. By the moment of our debut album release we already had some new groovy stuff. So, we recorded our unreleased Doom/Death material for «Twofaced» EP and closed this theme. When the EP was out, we completely turned away from the sound represented on the record and turned to the groove.

3. I can see a cosmonaut on the artwork, do you think that you do some kind of cosmic music ?

It's not that obvious, our music is more about «inner cosmos». The artwork reflects both: the album name and the whole music concept on «Drunken Tales». As for «cosmic music»... well, we tried to make our music meditative, hypnotic, groovy and trippy... But if by «cosmic music» you mean music about spaceships and asteroids, it's not like that.

4. You are signed by Solitude Productions which is a Russian Doom label. Is there a big Russian Doom community ? I mean, is the Doom well represented in your country ?

If you mean Traditional Doom Metal, Stoner Doom and Sludge Doom – over the last years, in our country appeared some new bands playing this kind of music. From our point of view, the Russian Doom Metal community is not that big, but, at least, it exists.

5. Are you professional musicians or do you have another job ?

All of us have non-musical jobs. We don’t make money with our music.

6. « Drunken Tales » is out so are you going on tour ? Are there gigs programmed in France ?

We bounded by our jobs and families, so, «going on tours» becomes quite a problem. Recently, we changed our drummer and one of the guitar players, and now we have just become ready for gigs again. We will perform soon here, in Siberia, if we find appropriate place. As for gigs in France – we certainly will consider this, if we receive an invitation, but at this moment we don’t have any invitations from your country.

7. Do you have new ideas for another record ? Will you do another record ?

Now we’re mixing or rather remixing some records. The thing is, «Drunken Tales» was released prior to some older stuff, which we couldn't release because of some problems with our ex-sound engineer. Now we are trying to get those records into shape. Also, we are permanently writing new stuff, and, at some point, we will go to the studio again.

8. Thank you for your answers, do you have a last word for our readers ?

Thank you for your questions and interest in our band. Be waiting for our next releases! And more awesome music stuff to all of us!

Salut les gars ! « On est le groupe avec un cosmonaute bourré sur la pochette du disque ! », dans ces eaux-là.

2. Votre style a changé depuis votre dernier album. Vous semblez être passés au stoner / doom, ou au drunken tales. Expliquez-nous cette transformation.

L’explication est facile : nos valeurs musicales ont changé et nous avons mis de l’ordre dans nos priorités. D’ailleurs, quand notre premier album est sorti, notre groove avait déjà évolué. On a donc enregistré un titre de doom / death pour le maxi Two-Faced mais il n’est pas sorti, et on a tourné la page. Après ce disque, on a complètement laissé tomber ce style.

3. On voit un cosmonaute sur la pochette ; considérez-vous faire une musique cosmique ?

Ce n’est pas aussi évident ; disons qu’il s’agit de « cosmos intérieur ». La pochette reflète à la fois le nom de l’album et le concept musical de Drunken Tales. Quant à parler de « cosmique »... on essaie effectivement de faire une musique méditative, hypnotique, groovy et barrée... Par contre, si vous faites allusion à des vaisseaux spatiaux ou des astéroïdes, la réponse est non !

4. Vous avez signé chez Solitude Productions, un label russe de doom. La communauté russe de doom est-elle si importante ? Le doom est-il bien représenté dans votre pays ?

Si vous parlez de doom metal traditionnel, de stone doom et de sludge doom, plusieurs groupes sont effectivement apparus dans notre pays ces dernières années. Nous dirions plutôt que cette communauté n’est pas très importante, mais au moins elle existe.

5. Êtes-vous des musiciens professionnels ou exercez-vous une profession en parallèle ?

Nous avons tous un boulot extra-musical. Notre musique ne nous rapporte pas de quoi vivre.

6. Avec la sortie de « Drunken Tales », allez-vous partir en tournée ? Avez-vous prévu des concerts en France ?

Nous sommes liés par nos emplois et nos familles, et « partir en tournée » n’est pas si facile. On a récemment changé de batteur et un de nos deux guitaristes, mais nous sommes prêts pour de nouveaux shows. On se produit bientôt ici, en Sibérie, dès que l’on trouve la bonne salle. Quant à des concerts en France, oui nous y pensons, mais nous n’avons à ce jour reçu aucune invitation.

7. Avez-vous des idées, déjà, pour un prochain album ? Est-il déjà prévu ?

Nous sommes actuellement occupés à remixer certaines chansons. Le truc, c’est que Drunken Tales est sorti avant des morceaux plus anciens ; on n’avait pas pu les sortir à cause de dissensions avec notre ancien ingé-son. Nous essayons actuellement de donner forme à ces bandes. Et puis nous passons notre temps à composer de nouveaux titres, on va bien finir par retourner en studio !

8. Merci de nous avoir consacré du temps. Peut-être avez-vous un dernier mot à dire à nos lecteurs ?

Evoke The Lords is a five-headed beast hailing from Siberia, Russia. Drunken Tales is the band's second full-length released through Solitude Productions.

Let me start by saying that this album is one of the weirdest, coolest and heaviest things I heard all year. Evoke Thy Lords combines an array of different styles and genres to create a truly unique sound you don't hear everyday. To somehow describe it; A progressive brew of trippy death, doom and stoner with an arousing touch of bluesy psychedelica, space and folk. The band's extensive sound goes far beyond the usual standards we get from this "type" of music. It drags you from the bulky swamps of rifftastic stoner/ doom to a fairy tale land filled with soothing bass lines and meditative flutes. Sounds crazy, but it's done in a really eccentric and immersive way. From the solid instrumentation and songwriting to the massively hypnotizing sound.

Drunken Tales by Evoke Thy Lords is a wicked gem you should check out asap. For fans of Vulgaari, Mozergush and Kamni.
